Climate change, pandemics, microplastics, species extinctions, extreme inequality, mental health crises and AI risks are just some of the multiple overlapping crises we face. At the heart is an economic system built on a need for short-term returns and endless accumulation of wealth. This is in turn grounded in economic theories which ignore the living world on which we all depend, and allow the true costs of our economic activities to fall on the most vulnerable in society - and future generations.
Recent years have seen an explosion in new economic thinking and regenerative business practices. Concepts such as Wellbeing Economies, Doughnut Economics and Beyond Growth are now gaining traction, supported by scholarship from fields like Ecological Economics, Feminist Economics, Systems Thinking and Modern Monetary Theory. These offer pathways towards a world in which our economies work in service of life - not the other way around.
At the Regenerative Economy Lab, we believe the required speed of change is too rapid to be left to economists alone. We aim to educate and empower more people to take part in the transformation to a regenerative economy. Our tailored programs bring together like-minded people across diverse groups - public sector, the arts, media, business, science - to help them identify ways they can take action in their organisations, communities, networks and within society at large
In this two-day weekend workshop designed for people from the private or for-profit sector, we will delve into the roots of our planetary crises, how they relate to our economic system - and how we can work to transform it. Together, we will unpack what a regenerative economy could look like, discussing transformative ideas and examples across policy, business and finance. We will identify power structures and common discourses that block transformation, and explore new narratives and strategies that may help us overcome resistance and create societal tipping points. Using the tools of systems thinking, we will explore leverage points and actions we can begin to take individually and as a growing community.

I am a Scottish economist based in Vienna, Austria. My 22 years of experience span the private sector, local government, media and non-profits. I spent some 15 years consulting and writing for major corporations and media brands such as The Economist, Financial Times and Newsweek before an alarming lecture by a climate scientist provoked me to change path. After trying, rather unsucessfully, to convince my corporate clients of solutions such as net zero and circular economy, I realised it is our economic system that needs to change.
I have had the privilege to work with and learn from leading planetary scientists and new economic thinkers. Over the past several years I have organised and facilitated 100s of workshops and given talks for a variety of audiences from local governments to CEOs. I also wrote and narrated the acclaimed Tipping Point podcast series about 1972's The Limits to Growth, which has so far been streamed over 40,000 times and recently included in the Peabody-nominated series, Capitalism.
